The story of the elmo bag
Our neice Katelyn’s birthday is coming up soon (the big 2). Last month, out of having nothing better to do, I made a little bag for our other neice, Hanna. I found some Dora the Explorer fabric and made her a bag. It’s got little Doras playing soccer all over it and she calls it her “soccah thang”. Since it turned out to be such a hit, I thought I’d make one for Katelyn too. I decided to make an Elmo bag—she loves Elmo. Unfortunately for me, there is no elmo (or any sesame street) fabric to be had. I found this out after we had already promised a bag to Katelyn.
So then it was time to come up with a plan…how to make an elmo bag with no elmo fabric?
My first plan was brilliant—steal an elmo pic off the internet and print it onto that fabric transfer paper to make your own elmo fabric! So simple! Foolproof!
So poorly exectuted. First of all, elmo did not want to be printed on our computer (as the printer made elmo look a bit jaundiced), so I had to use my grandpa’s printer. Mission accomplished, right? Wrong. Elmo proved extremely unwilling to come off of the transfer paper and onto the fabric. So much so that now I have decorated my ironing board with about 17 little elmo heads. In case you were wondering, elmo looks pretty scary when half of his face is missing. Poor little monster.
So then it was back to the basics. I drew a big elmo head from the smaller stolen internet version. I went to the store (again!) and bought some felt and did applique eyes, nose, and mouth for elmo and embroidered the rest of his face on bag #2. I actually like the result quite a bit more than the first idea.
So today we are shopping for the rest of the birthday gift. Wish us better luck. And, since you had to wade through that story, here’s a picture of the elmo bag for you. Click on the picture to see a bigger version.
Happy Birthday Katelyn!
