Bula!

Bula means welcome or hello in fijian. Welcome is definately what you feel as soon as you get off the plane in Nadi. We are greeted by smiling singing Fijians singing welcome in the airport. Truly one of the most beautiful places we have ever been, (think paradise with smiling happy people) and what a great start to our new adventure. We are having a great time on our island paradise. Pictures to come later!

Sabbatical.. finally

Transitions are hard. It has been hard to wrap up all the details of our move, sale of our condo, sale of my beloved fist car, and say goodbye to all our friends. Then a problem with my visa caused an additional delay and some personal stress. All the details have been confirmed. We are leaving tommorow for Fiji via LA. Then off to Hobart from Fiji. Finally riding to Launceston accross the state by vehicle. It’s time to focus again on some of the central goals of our year: sabbatical, simplify, rest, rejuvination, adventure. Our pastor Tim gave a great sermon on this, because he is also going on a sabatical.

Hello Mr. Prime Minister

Check out this cool web page that tells you what your ideal occupation if you type in your name. I can’t take credit for this myself, see Tim Samoff Weblogg . My ideal job is prime minister or brain surgeon depending if I am Rob Lam or Robert Lam.

The best of KC according to Rob and Erica

Okay, most of our posts lately have been slightly weepy. Give us a break—we’re moving on Saturday. Anyway, to bring up the mood, Rob and I thought we give one last act of service to all our friends in Kansas City. So we made a best of list. It’s all the best places to go in Kansas City (in our opinions). We hope you try them and like them. (Send us your suggestions too!)

Game on!

We celebrated the 4th with ruthless grueling competition. Let’s just say that not only was it one of the most intense bocce ball games, it was probably the longest as well. Todd you are an excellent host.

It's so hard to say goodbye...

It is finally starting to feel real. After 9 years in Kansas City, we’re moving. Every experience has an added significance as it becomes the last time we ever (fill in activity here). Such is the case with our final sunday at a community that we love. Jacob’s Well has been a wonderful community for us. We have been blessed in so many ways by this group of people.

Taking time to smell the roses

As our pending move becomes a reality, I created a list of experiences I wanted to have before we moved. I wanted to eat in the gas station that has some of the best BBQ in the city. I wanted to sit in the irish pub that is a converted underground distillery. It hit me while walking around Loose park in the rose garden, that sometimes the best experiences we can have are doing simple things with people we have relationship with. The subject of friendship has surfaced a lot recently in my life. I think we live in a world that is hungry for deep and meaningful relationships. We all desire community but don’t know how to go about creating and maintaining meaninful relationships. I have been wrestling with the idea of friendhsips that are based on having an intentional purpose. I want to allow myself to be open to share my life with my friends and not let those friendships fade. I want to be completely present during the time I spend with my friends. I want to enjoy and smell every rose that relationship brings.

Packing stinks!

Rob and I are starting to freak out. We’re moving in 9 days and nothing has been packed. Every day we say we need to start and then we think of other stuff to do. Procrastination has moved in.

Today we have made some progress, albeit little. We started our packing lists for what goes with us to Tassie. A baby step, but every marathon has to begin with one step.
