Denver (the man, not the city)...

Well, it’s been a while since I posted anything here. A lot has been happening, which I wish I had the motivation to write about (the new semester of teaching, starting my final year of Experimental Animation at CalArts, my recent white water rafting trip, the fact that I haven’t updated the Pics in this section for waaaayyyy too long, the fact that my new CD will be finished in about two weeks), but I just don’t.

The reason is the recent death of one of my dearest friends; a man who I consider my most important mentor to this point in my life. Denver Smith died last Thursday at 8pm after being moved, that day, to a hospice. He died after a 3-year bout with Lou Gehrig’s disease — a disease that the doctor’s initially said would claim his life within 6 months.

You can find out more about Denver’s life and the last year of his life (in which he recorded a full-length big band CD) at:
http://www.tennessean.com/sii/00/08/27/denver27.shtml (Sadly, the link is now dead.)

The following is letter that I sent to Denver’s sister, Cara:

Hi, Cara…

I heard that Denver passed away tonight. I am very sorry. My tears and condolences are with you and your family. I will try my hardest to attend any memorial that may be held.

It’s 2am and I still can’t get to sleep, so I thought that I would write some of my memories of Denver. As I said, he was a dear friend and will be greatly missed. I hope you can all find comfort in the fact that he was loved by many, many people.

His suffering was not in vain, as he was an inspiration to us all.
