Six months is an awful long time...
So, to make it all easy on your guys, I’ll try to be as brief as possible.
In January, I went to visit my brother and his wife in Kansas City, Missouri. During that time, I got back into contact with some life-long friends. During this reunion, of sorts, I became involved with the most wonderful girl, my childhood best friend’s sister. More on this in a sec…
During the period between my last journal posting and sometime in May, I finished my film. I know I talked a little about it, but I don’t think I ever described it. It’s a 7-minute essay-film that delves into theories about the route of creativity. It’s called, “Creative Regression: A Frictional Prolepsis.” It was one of 18 films, chosen out of 35, to appear in the California Institute of the Arts Experimental Animation Showcase. Despite some technical difficulties during the final output of the film — which were thankfully resolved after a few weeks of torment — I am extremely happy with it. If I ever get the time, I will be entering it in some festivals here and there.
In May, I graduated! Yay! I now possess a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Experimental Animation from California Institute of the Arts. This means one of three things if I choose to stay on the path of Experimental Animation: 1) I can apply for grants that might let me work on personal, self-seeking films for the rest of my life; 2) I can work on television commercials — ironically, the only place where experimental art is respected anymore; or 3) I can find a nice comfortable cardboard box somewhere and call it home. In actuality, I hope I will be able to continue my filmmaking endeavors on the side.
The spring semester at Moorpark College was splendid! My students were motivated and inspiring and I thank them for overshadowing what went on in the fall. It makes for a nice departure from what was a fun challenging place to work?
But you’re thinking to yourself now, “Did he just say departure?!” That’s right! Last semester just happens to be the last semester that I will be teaching at Moorpark. The past few months have really been a time of great decision making for me. I was applying for a full-time position at Moorpark (which I didn’t get), I was wondering what I would be doing with the rest of my life? The bottom line was that I was wondering how I could be happy. It turns out, that I have decided to move out to Kansas City, not only to be with my girlfriend (yes, the aforementioned girl from above), but also to try something new for a change! You see, I have been in this area of California for a long time and I am ready for an adventure! I have been applying to the school districts out there and hopefully something will come through. The thing is, I don’t know if I really care what I’ll be doing as long as I can still make art and music and have time to be myself.
Speaking of which! I finished a new CD that all of you should go buy. It’s 16 acoustic songs, written between 1999 and now. It was a blast to make and I think you’ll all like it. Go to http://www.mp3.com/tahg now!
And who’s this crazy little woman in Kansas City? Well, her name is Julianna and I am so happy about being with her that I don’t know if there are words to describe it. My decision to move out there should tell you something.
Oh, there’s so much more though! After graduation, my family and friends took it upon themselves to give me party after party for both graduation and my birthday? It was all very overwhelming, actually, but I really appreciate it and love them all so much. The partying went on for a couple of weeks, really, and by the end, I was definitely ready for it to be over!
So here’s where I stand: school is finished. Teaching in CA is finished. It’s time to move! No big whoop, huh?! Now, after a short visit to MO to see Julianna and to look for apartments, all that’s left in California is another fun-filled two weeks of teaching at CyberSummer and then I’m gone! I’m sure I’ll have a whole lot more to elaborate on about this later, but now you are all up to speed.
See ya,
Tim
