Bathroom painting: Day 4
The saga continues… No interruptions today except for lunch and dinner. Thankfully, after Julianna got home from work, she helped out tremendously by rolling the first coat of paint onto the walls (I would have still been painting if not for her help).
Things rarely go as smoothly as one would expect. I mean, I know what goes into painting — I’ve done it on a number of occasions before. Still, for every paint job, something unusual happens or something goes wrong or a little of both. Nothing really went wrong today (except for running out of masking tape and cutting my finger with my utility knife), but I did learn a couple of new things.
One is that paint has a hard time sticking to stained wood. Ok, I knew this. In fact, I bought a gallon of white primer just for this purpose. What I didn’t know was how hard of a time paint has sticking to stained wood. I discovered this after applying the fifth coat of white paint to some wood that I had primed and finding that the brown stain color still showed through. Luckily, I hadn’t started painting all of the wood yet; this first section of wood was a test run, of sorts. After dealing with this difficult area, I realized that I had to put a couple of coats of primer on everything else that was stained (two cabinet doors, two closet doors, and the ceiling) before even beginning to paint. (Not something I was too kean on, considering that I was already a day over — my ridiculous — schedule.)
The second thing I learned is that paint soaks through drop cloth sheets. Yeah, I should have known this. After cleaning up tonight, I found a bunch of little spots of paint on the carpet where they had dropped onto the sheet and then soaked through. Nice. The fun never ceases.
Tomorrow, I’ll be finished. (Or, will I?)
