Informatio: Introspection, Life
Race against race...
I was the only white guy on my first bus this morning.
It distresses how something so trivial can feel so uncomfortable.
I could say that it was them and not just me… I mean, it should go without saying that I should be able to be a minority on a bus for a few minutes, right? And couldn’t it be said that I wouldn’t have felt so uncomfortable if everyone didn’t stare at me like I was the minority?
I don’t know.
Something tells me that it is just me…
That is sad indeed.

It’s not just you. I think most of us in the majority (in your case and mine, that would mean caucasian) tend to feel uncomfortable when we’re suddenly the minority. Recently I was at a taco stand getting a chicken burrito (amazingly good, let me tell you; with two kinds of hot sauce!) and I was the only non-Hispanic there. It felt odd, even though I didn’t want it to feel odd, and I knew it shouldn’t really feel odd.

Strange thing… The same thing happened today (Tuesday) and it didn’t feel as weird. Either there were less people looking in my direction, or writing about it actually helped. Huh. We’ll see what happens tomorrow!
