E85 (Alternative Fuel)...

My buddy Dennis just pointed me towards this interesting article on (Ack! God forbid!):

EAGAN, Minn. – Like lots of motorists, Chuck Nye thought he had no choice but to grin and bear it as rising gas prices made filling up his minivan a painful experience.
But then he heard a radio ad promoting E85 — a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline — that sells for an average of about 45 cents per gallon less than regular unleaded. Inside his fuel door was a sticker saying Nye had a flexible fuel vehicle, which can burn the homegrown alternative.
Nye was sold.

My dad’s been using ethanol for years; I’m glad to hear there are more folks out there considering it.

For my part, I’m walking my errands as much as possible, doing multiple errands in one trip, and taking the bus with the kids. We love the bus!

Another alt fuel is biodiesel. Willie Nelson (http://www.wnbiodiesel.com) is a big proponent of biodiesel. It comes in flavors of 5% up to 100%. Or you can always run your diesel-powered vehicle on cooking oil (http://www.greasel.com/).

When we were looking for Beetles, we really wanted to get the Turbo Diesel model. But, since we couldn’t afford a brand new car, we settled for the regular unleaded version because the color (and the price) was right. If we ever get another car, I’m hoping we can get a hybrid or one of the cars that can run on the alternatives.

If they can ever make it affordable (over time it will be, the nature of the markets), hydrogen is the best. Maybe in the future if all units are hydrogen (by- product water) the environment will be able correct itself even more than it is trying currently?

I’m wondering why this guy is complaining about gas prices when he has a 130 mile daily commute and drives an SUV. I see a couple of things wrong with that situation that could easily be remedied…

I heard Taco Bell burrittos were a good alternate source of gas as well. So there’s always that.

The American Lung Association of Minnesota (mentioned frequently in the MSNBC story) supports E85…It is a practical, cleaner burning alternative to gasoline until a better clean fuel source can be developed and marketed.
