Nine Inch Nails (photos and video)...

, Saturday night, was fun. isn’t one of the greatest places to see any band, but NIN (as I’ve heard) never disappoints. (I’m sure they pay dearly for their sound engineers when touring places like this.)

The show was good. Trent Reznor threw out enough classics to keep me happy and played the newer songs with a heaviness not heard on the albums. At one point, Trent even played a couple of verses of ‘s “You’re So Vain.” Pretty cool.

I just had an epileptic seizure from your video clip.
I heard that Kenny G was the supporting act. Is that right?

Seizures aside, Kenny G rocked! No, actually, the opening band was some band called Moving Units — who we were too busy drinking beer at the River Market Brewery to see. ;-)

Sorry guys, as a saxophone player myself hearing the term “Kenny G rocked” just seems strange. Many jazz saxophonists, like myself, just don’t agree with regard to how well he plays (except how long he plays a note and we know one note doesn’t make a musician :)) My personal preferences are David Sanborn, Eric Marienthal, Joshua Redman, Branford (not Wynton) Marsalis, Coltrane and the lead saxophonists on the SNL band starting with Michael Brecker. The average jazz saxophonists would not place Kenny G anywhere near the greats.

On an interesting note I took lessons from Gary Foster in college, who was the incredible lead saxophonist in Henry Mancini’s band, who also happened to be Kenny G’s music instructor. Gary told me that after a year of lessons that Kenny G said “I think I’m ready to go pro.” Mr. Foster mentioned to me that he told Kenny in a tactful way how he need further instruction. What was funny was that Gary later said “now look at him, today he gets paid millions of dollars to play arpegios and scales”. At which point he just shook his head.

I guess this proves the point Tim, that you said a while back, that the greatest musicians are many times not the most popular. :)

Um, Doug… Do you know that we were joking about Kenny G? And, that this post really has nothing to do with saxaphones?

Yeah, I knew you guys were joking. :) Someone mentioned Kenny G within this post and I thought I would state some personal experience on it as part of the conversation. Kind of like a sidebar. Oh well, many times sidebars can very humorous. At least I was trying. :)

i just saw NIN Live: with teeth 2006 in Austin, TX a couple days ago, really really great show. I’d recommend seeing them live anyday! Great Show.
