This place feels a bit...sketchy...
Ok, so this was supposed to be finished for CSS Reboot Spring 2006, but, alas… Life happens, doesn’t it?
Likewise, I wasn’t quite up to my chops in AJAX, etc., etc., etc. (I’m a big whiner, no?)
But, the new design is finally complete!
Some of the features you may come to find:
- All sorts of AJAX effects via, Prototype, Rico, and Sébastien Gruhier‘s Protoype Window Class (JavaWin).
- Rico helps me with the cool “accordion” menu on the left there.
- JavaWin helps me with all of these cool draggable windows.
- I now have a pretty nifty little AJAX contact form, accessible from the menu up at the top of the page.
- “Revolving” page backgrounds.
- JavaScript detection — meaning that if you don’t have it enabled, you’ll be directed to the old design.
- Et cetera — there’s a lot of stuff going on here.
My site may cause a few slower computers to chug now. Sorry. If you have problems, you can still access the old design by going here. And, yeah, there are still a few technical issues that I’m working out…right…now.
Anyway, let me know what you think!

Whoa. Trippy. I can’t get used to it. I’ll come back later and offer my 2 cents then.

Wild! :)
It’s very attractive, but I might have a hard time being patient with all the fading if I clicked through to read your blog frequently. I usually just scan blog posts in my reader program, though, so that won’t affect me greatly.
Except for that – it’s really refreshingly different on the eyes! Very pretty!!

It’s a little confusing, but I’m sure I’ll get used to it, as we all do when we encounter something new and innovative. keep it up, Masta Tim!

Jean ~ I’d love to know what exactly is “trippy”... Just the look? Something more functional?
Christine ~ That’s a great comment about the fading. I will see if I can get the actual Entry pages to appear without fading so that people can click through them with ease.
Ganns ~ You crack me up!
What exactly is confusing? Is there something I can change to make it easier for you?
Thanks, guys!

OMG... Tim this is totally superb. I LOVE the ‘sketchy’ feel and the AJAX stuff. What an awesome job!
I have only one ‘gripe’ really… the typography. It lacks contrast which makes stuff sometimes kinda hard to read. And… Courier? Ack!
A point for improvement: The preview isn’t AJAX while it could be!

Hmm… same goes for POSTING comments. If you want my code, drop me a line! (I have AJAX commenting)

I’m glad you like it Marco! And, yeah, I know of some of the problems — which I’m trying to fix — but, I don’t really know how… Maybe implementing it all in AJAX would be the solution (I’ll email you).
As for the typography… Well, I chose Courier in order to make it feel more like a typed page. I am still playing around with it a little, though.

It feels like John Lennon artwork. And that is a very good thing to feel like.

I like this. More than most I think. But maybe I’m just random.

Really nice. I am in awe!!! Of course that’s a comment from a technically challenged computer user who thinks his computer is just another appliance.

Doug ~ Lucky for you, this is a liquid-based Blog. I’m glad you’re feelin’ it.
Dorothy ~ That’s quite a compliment indeed, although, I don’t know if I feel comfortable with it!
James ~ Random is ok — as long as it means that you like the new design!
Larry ~ Wow, that’s quite a response. Thank you! (Even if you come here because you think it will warm up your coffee.)

yeah, someone beat me to it but it IS very “Imagine” record cover-ish. Cool stuff, dude. But how does bathroom cleanser help with all this? whatever… Very cool.

Thanks, Dennis… You had no idea what that cleanser could do, could you?

Looks great. Handwritten is always good.
Small thing – from Bloglines clicking “Tim Samoff // Weblog” got me to a ‘not found’ page telling me:
The page you have entered:
...does not exist..
Easy enough to click through to the hompage though. Clicking on an individual entry worked no problem.

I decided that I like it. =) Yeah, I couldn’t put my finger on it when I first saw it, but very “Lennonesque”. I haven’t seen anything else like it on the web. Gives you the feeling of a real journal, a place for writing down thoughts and stuff. Guess that was your intention, lol. Neato bandito. Wow, as I’m sitting here typing this “(Just Like) Starting Over” came up on my iTunes shuffle! lol

Hmmm… Weird. Do you know if your browser is set to accept cookies or not? (Or, maybe delete cookies when you close the browser?) If so, that would be the cause.
If you are set to accept cookies, then it might be something on my side.

Tim, Owen {gooddogbaddog} here. Listen, I am 100% jealous. This is a fantastic design. Holy Cow. I want it. Back when I began being online in 2001 I wanted a sketchy looking site, maybe with my own hand writing and drawings and a readable typewriter font. I saw one that was very simple, very much like this in look but not interactive. You’ve done it and then some. Just beautiful. Man!
So, these days the art site is here onionboy.ca and the writing site is in the URL line.
Best regards.

Owen! Thanks for commenting and updating me. Your compliments mean a lot, as I have respected your artwork greatly for years now. Thank you so much.
Also, I should have mentioned this in the post, but I’ve been planning on this “sketchy” look for a long time now — since January 30, 2004 to be exact! So, it has taken some time to finally realize my idea.
