Avocado update...

It’s been a while since I’ve brought up our avocado tree. As you’ll see in the photos below, it’s doing rather well. It wasn’t always doing this well, though.

After the avocado tree’s roots looked fairly healthy and its leaves were growing bigger and greener, we decided to replant the tree into a pot. This went great for a few weeks, but pretty soon, the leaves began to dry out and it appeared as though the tree was going to die. We didn’t know why this was, though.

Avocado trees need a lot of water. And, I wasn’t skimping. I kept the soil moist and made sure the tree was getting a lot of light. But, nothing helped.

In April, my mother came to town for a visit (when we had our baby). As you’ll recall from the original post, my mom is an avocado tree expert. She had two ideas about our dying tree:

  1. Something about the way we potted the tree wasn’t allowing for adequate drainage.
  1. The tree might do better if the avocado pit was left sticking out of the soil a little.

Well, whatever it was, my mom fixed the problem (she repotted the tree again and allowed for both of her ideas) and the tree has been doing great ever since.

Oh, yeah… The photos:

MMMMMMMM, avocado sooooo gooooood!! Jeano mucho jealouso. Can you keep that tree indoors it’s entire life?

We can probably keep in indoors, but it will never bear any fruit, so don’t be too jealous. (It won’t bear any fruit outdoors, either, unless we could graft it with another fruit-bearing tree.)
