Tiny Tiny RSS...
I’ve been using Gregarius as my primary RSS aggregator for quite a while now. It is simple and uncluttered, it’s AJAXy where it needs to be, it parses XML data very well, and the best part…it runs from my own server. Alas, Gregarius hasn’t been updated in a very long time and, truthfully, it’s been acting pretty buggy for the past few months.
Enter Tiny Tiny RSS...
Tiny Tiny RSS (or tt-rss for short) is another RSS/Atom reader that must be installed on a user’s own server (PHP/MySQL). So far, I have been very impressed.
Tt-rss:
- leaves a small footprint on the server (approx. 2MB)
- is asy to install/configure
- is designed with a clean, AJAXy user interface with three themes to choose from
- is ultiple-user capable
- has plenty of cool aggregation features (like search, article starring, filter rules, tag clouds/editing, an “adaptive” display, three-pane or two-pane view, etc.)
- can be monitored with the Tiny Tiny RSS Notifier Add-on for Firefox.
Anyway, I’ve already made the switch from Gregarius to tt-rss. Importing my OPML file was quick and painless and organizing my feeds into categories was a breeze.
I’d recommend Tiny Tiny RSS to anyone who prefers to store RSS feeds on their own server. (Tt-rss even looks great on my N800!)

Tim, thanks for the recommend. I used Gregarius for a while and found much the same as you. In my case, it also froze my browser while updating feeds, which isn’t acceptable (I have a lot of feeds). I’ve been using MonkeyChow but am not completely happy with it either; it’s got a lot less polish. I also hacked together one of my own using SimplePie and no database, but it’s very basic with no history or ability to mark items read or not… though it does collapse the content below the headlines. I’ll give Tiny RSS a try.

I made that same switch quite a while ago (and I brought all my saved entries over through the creative abuse of SQL) but I have trouble using it on any smaller devices. The mobile theme “works” but leaves a lot of functionality by the wayside (basic things like “don’t mark that read just cuz I opened the blurb” and “mark 3 of these 5 as read”.) A great example is the past holiday weekend (well, in the US) where we were at the beach. Rather than dig out my n800 and deal with ttrss’s small-screen problems, I just used my phone (9300i) and browsed the sites directly. (Due to limitations on the phone’s web browser and available bandwidth, it was mostly just fark and some scuba blogs, rather than the dozens of feeds I normally skim.)
One huge advantage of ttrss is that it gets betterfast. I’ve opened several bug/support tickets and they always get handled, often within hours. The dev is very responsive and overall quite cool :)

I’ve been on Gregarius for about a month. My question had to do with the “Category” feature, which I can’t find an interface for anywhere within the program. I’ll give Tiny Tiny a try, particularly if it is being further developed.

That’s right…I’m in Ireland right now, enjoying Guinness and Murphy’s and all the other ammenities that Ireland has to offer. I know you’re jealous, but I’ll be sure to take pictures for you of the Guinness brewery when I tour it next weekend.
